Chronicles of Avonlea is a charming collection of short stories by L. M. Montgomery, set in the picturesque town of Avonlea, the well-loved home of Anne of Green Gables.
This delightful anthology introduces readers to new characters and new adventures, all full with the same warmth that Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables readers have come to love. In twelve tales, Chronicles of Avonlea brings to life a village world where kindness, friendship, and second chances prevail.
The well-loved character Anne Shirley makes a couple of surprise appearances, while around her, Montgomery’s cast of Avonlea villagers – the old doctor, the spinster aunts, the quietly stubborn schoolteachers – all take their turn in the foreground.
Read & Co. Children’s is proudly republishing Chronicles of Avonlea, Montgomery’s 1912 companion volume to the matching Anne of Green Gables series – a beautifully made keepsake edition for the re-reader, complete with a brand-new introductory biography of the author.
Key features:
This Read & Co. Children’s edition of Chronicles of Avonlea is a charming companion volume to our matching eight-book Anne of Green Gables Series, featuring twelve short stories written by L. M. Montgomery in 1912, set in and around the small town where Anne grew up.
For readers returning to Avonlea after the Anne novels, this collection is the natural next step. Anne herself is in the background more than the foreground as the town’s characters make up the principal cast. While she appears a few times, these stories really capture the heart and personality of her hometown, focusing on tales like the old doctor’s romance, the spinster’s late courtship, the schoolmaster’s stubborn faith in his pupils.
We are proud to present it here as a treasured keepsake edition for the re-reader, as well as those discovering Anne’s story for the first time, in a volume built to be read and returned to over a lifetime.
Chronicles of Avonlea sits in the middle of Montgomery’s writing chronology – published in 1912, three years after Anne of Avonlea (1909) and three years before Anne of the Island (1915). Most of the twelve short stories were reworked from earlier magazine pieces Montgomery had placed before her first novel found a publisher. Anne Shirley herself takes a small but recognisable role in two of the stories – ‘The Hurrying of Ludovic’ and ‘The Courting of Prissy Strong’ – while the village of Avonlea and its characters take a more central role.
