Book Description

From early blossoms and returning birds to lengthening days and Easter celebrations, The Spring Story Book gathers a treasured collection of tales, poems, and legends that reflect the themes of spring.

‘There is no richer theme for children’s stories than the miracle of spring.’

Collecting folk tales, seasonal poetry, and charming legends from around the world, this storybook captures the freshness and wonder of springtime. Featuring work from beloved literary voices, including Hans Christian Andersen, Robert Browning, and Oscar Wilde.

This seasonal anthology is part of a matching collection alongside The Summer Story Book, The Autumn Story Book, and The Winter Story Book. Gathered from many hands and many countries, the stories, poems, and legends in each volume are arranged to carry the reader through the season from its first signs to its close. Curated by Ada M. Skinner and Eleanor L. Skinner in 1917, The Spring Story Book is presented here by Read & Co. Classics as one of a treasured set of four.

Editorial Reviews

The Spring Story Book, arranged by Ada and Eleanor Skinner (Duffleld), is a really valuable collection of favorite stories from a wide choice of authors — Eugene Field, Kate Douglas Wiggin, Selma Lagerlof, and many others. It would go well on a shelf beside its companion volumes, The Summer Story Book and several others”.– The Independent, December, 1920″An admirable book for children. The compilers, Ada M. Skinner and Eleanor L. Skinner, have selected nearly seventy myths, legends, stories, and poems from the world’s great writers on nature and not one amongst them is open to criticism.”–The Argonaut, May, 1915

Publishers Note

Every season tells its own kind of story, and in the early twentieth century Ada M. Skinner and Eleanor L. Skinner gathered the best of them into four companion volumes. We are proud to publish the set as part of our Classics collection.

The Spring Story Book is the season of blossom and birdsong, of Easter and the year’s first green. Ours is an anthology to return to as each spring comes round – a treasured read or a keepsake to pass on.

More About this Edition

This anthology first appeared in 1915 as The Emerald Story Book, published in New York by Duffield & Company as part of the Skinners’ gemstone-titled seasonal series.

Like its companion volumes, it was issued with a colour frontispiece by the celebrated American illustrator Maxfield Parrish, whose seasonal paintings introduced each book in the original set.
