Centred on the wrath of Achilles in the final year of the siege, the original poem draws gods and mortal heroes alike, among them Hector, Agamemnon, and Odysseus, into the fighting. Homer’s epic was later transformed into flowing English prose by the novelist Samuel Butler in 1898, in a classic translation that opened Homer to readers beyond the verse tradition. The translator, Samuel Butler (1835 – 1902), is better remembered today as a novelist – the author of the satirical Erewhon and the posthumous The Way of All Flesh. Homer himself remains a figure of scholarly debate: the poems are generally dated to the late eighth or early seventh century BC, the work of a long oral storytelling tradition before they were ever written down.
