This treasured coming-of-age story chronicles the journey of a little red-headed orphan, Anne Shirley, as she struggles to settle into her new life on Prince Edward Island.

Hot-headed, strong-willed, and armed with a loose tongue, Anne Shirley is just eleven years old when she’s mistakenly sent to the Cuthbert’s farm at Green Gables. The ageing siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, couldn’t be more shocked when the fiery-headed Anne turns up in place of the boy they requested. Deciding to give the orphan a chance, they agree to let her stay so long as she helps with the farmwork.

Anne soon finds herself running into trouble. She takes the peaceful Avonlea community by storm, disturbing the steady rhythm of the villagers’ life. Stubborn and keen to make a name for herself, Anne begins to make lifelong friends (and enemies) in this much-loved coming-of-age classic.

First published in 1908, L. M. Montgomery brings the quick-witted and vividly imaginative Anne to life in this classic children’s novel. Incorporating themes of friendship, nature, morality and ambition, Anne of Green Gables has been loved for generations.

Editorial Reviews

“It is only necessary to read a few pages of the book to be assured that Anne of Green Gables is in conception and style, the fruit (the first fruit, we believe) of a richly endowed mind of rare imaginative capacity. Her scenes and the personages with which she peoples them become real as one reads.” – The Gazette, 1908

“Anne of Green Gables is the dearest, most moving and delightful child since the immortal Alice.” – Mark Twain, 1908

“It is a gem even, with her red hair and freckles. We should dearly have loved Anne Shirley in the flesh.” – Temple Scott, 1908

Publishers Note

This Read & Co. Children’s edition presents Anne of Green Gables in its complete, unabridged 1908 text, as the first beautiful volume of Montgomery’s eight-book Anne of Green Gables series.

Sitting at the heart of our children’s collection, this charming novel has remained continuously in print since its publication and is followed by seven sequels, making Anne’s Avonlea one of English literature’s most fully realised and treasured fictional places.

Designed for the adult re-reader as much as for those discovering it for the first time, we believe this charming classic holds its place on every bookshelf, making it the perfect keepsake gift to be read and returned to over a lifetime.

Extract or Book Quotes

“Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?”– L. M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables, 1908

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” – L. M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables, 1908

More About this Edition

Published in 1908, Anne of Green Gables was Montgomery’s first novel and an immediate commercial success – within five months it had sold nineteen thousand copies and made the unknown Canadian schoolteacher a household name on both sides of the Atlantic. Montgomery, who was thirty-three when the book appeared, drew the world of Avonlea closely from her own childhood village of Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, where she had been raised by her grandparents. Anne herself – the red hair, the loose tongue, the iron certainty about beauty – is her own invention, but the orphan-girl premise was suggested by a real notebook entry Montgomery made decades earlier about a couple who applied for a boy and were sent a girl by mistake.
