Book Description

This charming novel is the fourth book in the Anne of Green Gables series. Twenty-two years old and away from home, the much-loved Anne Shirley has to find her own way in the world once more as she begins a new job in Windy Poplars.

Beginning a new phase of her life, Anne has finally left the Cuthberts’ farm. Filled with romance and charming moral tales, this story is mostly told through the letters that Anne exchanges with her fiancé, Gilbert Blythe. The couple try to maintain their relationship while Gilbert begins medical school and Anne embarks on a new path as the principal of Summerside High School in Windy Poplars.

Anne lodges in the cosy tower room of an old house, Windy Willows, belonging to Aunt Kate and Aunt Chatty. She soon makes friends with the women and their housekeeper, Rebecca Dew. The ‘royal family’ of Summerside, the Pringles, make it very clear that she is not their first choice for the principal’s job.

Read & Co. Children’s is proudly republishing Anne of Windy Poplars as the fourth volume of Montgomery’s matching Anne of Green Gables collection – a beautifully made keepsake edition for the re-reader, complete with a brand-new introductory biography of the author.

Publishers Note

This Read & Co. Children’s edition of Anne of Windy Poplars is the fourth volume of our matching eight-book Anne of Green Gables Series. Published in 1936, this instalment chronicles Anne’s three years as principal of Summerside High School, told largely in the letters she writes home to Gilbert during their long engagement.

In this volume L. M. Montgomery opens out the wider Avonlea cast: Aunt Kate and Aunt Chatty, the irrepressible Rebecca Dew, little Elizabeth, and the formidable Pringles of Summerside.

Unique in its format, but as warm in its writing as the rest of the series, we are proud to present it here as part of the matching Anne of Green Gables collection. Perfect for the re-reader, as well as those discovering Anne’s story for the first time, this beautiful collector’s edition is a treasured keepsake to be read and returned to over a lifetime.

More About this Edition

Anne of Windy Poplars was published in 1936, twenty-one years after Anne of the Island. By then Montgomery was in her early sixties and had published seventeen further novels in between. This was the fourth Anne book in story chronology but the seventh she wrote. The book’s epistolary form – told largely through Anne’s letters to Gilbert – is unique within the series. It was also published under, Anne of Windy Willows, as an alternative title, named after the house at which Anne lodges in the story.
