Book Description

The final book in the Anne of Green Gables series is the story of Anne’s youngest daughter, Bertha Marilla, affectionately known as Rilla, and the upheaval she experiences as the First World War commences.

At fourteen, Rilla is a spirited and dreamy teenager, more interested in her first dance and hoping for her first kiss than the world beyond her doorstep. However, her carefree days at Ingleside are abruptly changed when her brothers go off to fight in the Great War, leaving behind a void and a sense of responsibility she had never anticipated.

Rilla’s life takes an unexpected turn when she encounters an orphaned child in desperate need of care and a loving home. As she steps up to the challenge, Rilla’s journey mirrors the early years of her mother, Anne, showing her growth from a dreamy girl to a mature and compassionate young woman.

Publishers Note

This Read & Co. Children’s edition of Rilla of Ingleside is the eighth and final volume of our matching eight-book Anne of Green Gables Series. Published in 1921, this last instalment follows Anne’s youngest daughter on the Canadian home front during the First World War.

Often considered the most powerful book in the series, Rilla of Ingleside is one of the very few contemporary novels written from a Canadian woman’s perspective on the home front, and it is the natural close to Anne’s tale. A brilliant end to Montgomery’s seminal series, it forms the final part of the wonderful story.

Perfect for the re-reader, as well as those discovering Anne’s story for the first time, this beautiful collector’s edition is a treasured keepsake to be read and returned to over a lifetime.

More About this Edition

Montgomery finished Rilla of Ingleside in 1920 and published it the following year, within three years of the Armistice. The war material present in the novel was inspired by the present Montgomery was living through while she was writing – Susan Baker’s running commentary on the news from France, the daily rhythm of Glen St. Mary under wartime conditions, and the long waits between letters.

Fifteen years after Rilla of Ingleside was published, Montgomery returned to the Anne series with Anne of Windy Poplars (1936) and Anne of Ingleside (1939). Both instalments are set earlier in Anne’s life, but Rilla remained the closing volume of the series.
