Book Description

From long summer days of adventure to hazy afternoons in sunlit fields, The Summer Story Book gathers a wide-ranging collection of stories, poems, and legends that reflect the joy and freedom of the season.

‘The young reader enriches his experience by learning to interpret “the open pages of the world about him.”‘

Bringing together nature stories, seasonal poetry, and long-told legends from many cultures, this treasury captures the essence of summer. Featuring selections from celebrated authors such as William Shakespeare, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and John Keats.

This seasonal anthology is part of a matching collection alongside The Spring Story Book, The Autumn Story Book, and The Winter Story Book. Gathered from many hands and many countries, the stories, poems, and legends in each volume are arranged to carry the reader through the season from its first signs to its close. Curated by Ada M. Skinner and Eleanor L. Skinner in 1917, The Summer Story Book is presented here by Read & Co. Classics as one of a treasured set of four.

Editorial Reviews

“Contains some very lovely myths and poems of nature, collected from the folk-lore of many countries. The book is a companion volume to The Autumn Story Book and The Spring Story Book.” —St. Louis Post-Dispatch, October 1919″Nature stories and legends in prose and in verse for little children. The stories are selected from many well-known writers for children.” — The Bookman, 1915″This is a collection of legends, tales and poems for fourth or fifth grade about the skies, meadows, brooks, trees and insects of summer. Stories are grouped under headings making the collection convenient for teachers.”–The Booklist: A Guide to the Best New Books, 1919

Publishers Note

Few editors knew the seasons’ stories better than Ada M. Skinner and Eleanor L. Skinner, who gathered the best of them into four companion volumes in the early years of the twentieth century. We are proud to publish the set as part of our Classics collection.

The Summer Story Book is the season of long days and open fields, of adventure, and warm evening light. Ours is an anthology to return to as each summer comes round – a treasured read or a keepsake to pass on.

More About this Edition

This anthology first appeared in 1918 as The Turquoise Story Book, published in New York by Duffield & Company as part of the Skinners’ gemstone-titled seasonal series.

Like its companion volumes, it was issued with a colour frontispiece by the celebrated American illustrator Maxfield Parrish, whose seasonal paintings introduced each book in the original set.
